Joy Series
Amy Stewart’s series Joy emerged almost accidentally. As she added small blocks of colour to the shapes and lines that characterize her work, she found a corresponding feeling of joy. Shifting to make room for these new, bright shapes, the series developed as a means of considering the importance of joy in our lives. More than happiness, joy can impact our health and build connections. It is a deep and immediate feeling, capable of igniting creativity and positive change in the world.
Each of us may have a different source of joy—distinctive avenues to that profound and overwhelming burst of feeling. Like the blocks of colour that emerge as surprising, vivid angles across Stewart’s canvases, joy roots us into those aspects of ourselves that are most resilient and uplifted. Against the lines that suspend or arc in swoops of gold and along the soft swaths of greens and blues and whites, Stewart’s jubilant geometrics reflect the joy she considers as she paints, inviting us to contemplate the sources of our own joy—where it comes from and how it guides us towards meaning.
